Highlights Since Season 1

You’re probably wondering where I’ve been…

It takes a lot of love, time, resources, and labor to produce a podcast independently. The pressure to publish work in a culture that values speed can be overwhelming at times. However, I’m committed to producing a quality podcast even if the process is slow(er) and my real Black life outside of this project impedes it. I’ve always likened myself to a slow cooker in a microwave world. But, admittedly, I’ve been doing a lot more than marinating and simmering behind the scenes since I released Season 1 in September 2020. Below are select highlights from the past year.

LISTEN TO Episode 1 of Season 2 here where I SHARE more about how my doctoral research project and this podcast have evolved over the past year.

february 2021

I facilitated my first “Podcasting 101” workshop at New York City Digital Humanities (NYCDH) Week.

April 2021

I published an essay titled “Podcast as a Form of Scholarship” on the website for American Anthropologist, the flagship journal of the American Anthropological Association (AAA).

April 2021

I was a guest on the first episode of the third season of Anthropological Airwaves, the official podcast of American Anthropologist.

June 2021

I became the official owner of the “BLK IRL®” registered trademark. I began my trademark application process with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in September 2020 with the help of the excellent team at Creative Genius Law.

July 2021

I received a partial grant from the Society for Visual Anthropology (SVA) to begin work on Season 2 of “The BLK IRL® Podcast.” Prior to this point, BLK IRL® had been a fully self-funded venture. This grant money allowed me to travel for production and develop multimedia extensions for season 2 so it can be experienced both sonically and visually.

October 2021

I was invited by University of Chicago’s Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture (CSRPC) to facilitate my “Podcasting 101” workshop for undergraduate students.
